During summer vacation, we apply for a policy competition as a special project. Decide the research topic, collect information, analyze, fieldwork, and make a report: all these things are carried out mostly by students, and also, we sometimes make a presentation.

Special Projects

In the seminar every week, there are lectures by our professor and presentations of each student’s study. In the lectures, he talks about basic theories of Public Administration and the basis of quantitative analysis, and offers some tips in order that students can use them for their own study. Each student presents their study twice a semester, and our professor gives feedback to it.

In each spring and summer semester, there is fieldwork. By observing public facilities and interacting with other universities, it can be a chance to learn something practically. Last year, we went to the Shiroyama Dam in the spring semester and the International University of Japan in Niigata Pref. in the autumn semester.

FAQ

How is it different from other research groups?
What are the characteristics of this research?

The strengths of the Shinohara Research Group are:
Analysis and policy recommendations based on a theoretical framework .

We are often compared to research groups working on community development, but compared to other groups, we focus on steadily conducting analysis and taking a long-term perspective in order to make a difference.

Can I work only on qualitative research?

At the Shinohara Research Group, we believe that qualitative research and quantitative research are always inseparable. Since we conduct international administrative research , we often conduct quantitative analysis using data.

Students' research methodologies are diverse, with some conducting theory-based case studies and others using quantitative analysis.

How can I take Professor Shinohara's classes?

The classes taught by Professor Shinohara are as follows:

  • GOVERNANCE AND INSTITUTIONS(LOCAL GOVERNMENT) (JP/GIGA・GG)

  • METHODOLOGY STUDY (JP/GIGA・GG)

  • QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS FOR SOCIAL SCIENCES (GIGA/GG)

What research are students doing?

The current research topics of our students are as follows:

  • Design Thinking in Government

  • Compact City

  • Quantitative analysis of public opinion on education

Since the government is involved with various fields, the research fields of students are also wide. If you are not sure whether your research content matches the Shinohara Research Group, it may actually be a good fit.

How many people are in the study group?

The Japanese Language Seminar and English Language Seminar have a total of about 15 members. Each person is pursuing his or her own research with a specific goal in mind.
